The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin by Kenneth S. Norris,

The Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin by Kenneth S. Norris,
This absorbing book is the first comprehensive scientific natural history of a dolphin species ever written. From their research camp at Kealake'akua Bay in Hawaii, the authors followed a population of wild spinner dolphins for more than twenty years. They observed marked animals by ship, by air, from a cliffside observation post, by radiotracking their movements, and by studying the details of their underwater social life with the use of a windowed underwater vessel. Beginning with a description of the spinner dolphin species, including its morphology and systematics, the book examines the ocean environment and organization of dolphin populations and the way this school-based society of mammals uses shorelines for rest and instruction of the young. An analysis of the dolphins' reproductive patterns, which resemble those of other group-dwelling mammals such as certain primates, suggests a fission-fusion society. Vision, vocalization, hearing, breathing, feeding, predation, integration of the school, and school movement are all examined to give the fullest picture yet published of dolphin biological life. One of the most striking features of the species is the length of the period of juvenility and instruction of the young. The authors argue that dolphins may legitimately be called "cultural", and they turn in their conclusion to a comprehensive evolutionary analysis of this marine cultural system with its behavioral flexibility and high levels of cooperation. In a challenging new interpretation of how cultural organisms may evolve, they propose that spinner dolphin society be viewed as a set of nested levels of organization that influence one another by selectional biases. The resultingcooperative patterns support both the sociology and the cultural levels of organization, without being overridden by the supposed imperative of kin selection.

Jessie and the Dolphins by Tatjana Tekkel,
Jessie and the Dolphins by Tatjana Tekkel,
A delightful children's story, Jessie and the Dolphins is about a five year old fisherman's daughter who wants her father to take her to sea on his boat. Her father says that a fishing boat is much too dangerous for a little girl, and she can go with him when she is older and bigger. But Jessie cannot wait and on the next fishing trip she hides very quietly on deck behind a coil of rope. However, things go horribly wrong for poor Jessie and drama unfolds when she finds herself struggling in the water. Happily, she is rescued by three dolphins and safely returned to the beach. The unusual illustrations are photographs of hand crafted collage pictures consisting of a variety of fabrics and textures. The author has used patchwork and applique techniques to create wonderfully evocative pictures which have an almost three-dimensional effect. Jessie and the Dolphins is a work of art as well as a children's story and will be loved and treasured by children and parents alike.

Computer wallpaper - The terms wallpaper and desktop picture refer to an image used as a background on a computer screen, usually for the desktop of a graphical user interface. 'Wallpaper' is the term used in Microsoft Windows, while the Mac OS avoids mixing metaphors by calling it a 'desktop picture' (prior to Mac OS X, the term desktop pattern was used to refer to a small pattern that was repeated to fill the screen).

Picture-in-picture - Picture in Picture (PiP) allows you to watch more than one TV program(channel) at the same time on television sets or other devices. With PiP feature of TV, one program will be displayed on the entire TV screen, and another program or programs will be displayed in individual smaller squares on the screen.

Interaction picture - In quantum mechanics, the Interaction picture (or Dirac picture) is an intermediate between the Schrödinger picture and the Heisenberg picture. Whereas in the other two pictures either the state vector or the operators carry time dependence, in the interaction picture both carry part of the time dependence of observables.

Heaviside's Dolphin - Heaviside's Dolphin (Cephalorhynchus heavisidii) is a small dolphin that is found off the coast of Namibia and the west coast of South Africa. It is one of four dolphins in the Cephalorhychus genus - the others being the Chilean Dolphin, Hector's Dolphin and Commerson's Dolphin.
